All Mixed Up! Volume 1 : Shep Pettibone - Various Artists

"All Mixed Up!" is an ongoing project that I've been tinkering around with over the best part of 20 years.
The aim of this project has been to showcase the best remixes and alternative takes of classic tracks by the greatest artists, producers, DJ's et all..

Designed to highlight the cream of each respective artists back catalogue, many an hour has been spent constructing the tracklists in order to show the overall depth and breadth of each artists work.
No doubt there's likely to be something that I've missed out on along the way but then that's what the comment box is for...

This is exactly why I set The Vault up in the first place.

NOW That's What I Call Music 7 - Various Artists (Virgin / EMI - 1986)

What we're gonna do here is go back... way back...

Those of you that have followed me since The Vault V1.0 back in 2013 will already be aware that this series is something that I collect religiously. Ever since I was handed the glossy double gatefold of NOW 1 way back in 1983 this collection has stayed with me through my terrible teens all the way up to present day... I won't ramble on about it here as I'd rather you enjoyed the music and as the tagline goes on this album "Feel The Quality"...

NOW 7 was released in late summer 1986 (August 11th) on 33 track double vinyl & cassette and a 20 track video selection. The reason I've picked this particular volume over others is that it's a fantastic representation of all that was credible or crap (depending on your taste in music) during the 80's - it's also a damn good representation of why the 80's is my favourite decade for music. This volume was unique within the NOW series at the time as although the cover boasted "32 Top Chart Hits" there were in fact 33 as Queen managed to sneek in there with bonus track "A Kind Of Magic" (Record / Cassette 2 Side 1).

In my opinion NOW 7 has an extremely strong line up covering all bases from teen pop to alternative indie types, long time classics, to the fast growing dance scene (represented perfectly on the final side). It's a great snapshot of music from the blistering summer of '86. I hope you enjoy it!!!

Record 1 Side 1

1. Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer
2. UB40 - Sing Our Own Song
3. Sly Fox - Let's Go All The Way
4. Level 42 - Lessons In Love
5. Pet Shop Boys - Opportunities (Let's Make Lots Of Money)
6. Pete Wylie - Sinful!
7. Stan Ridgway - Camouflage
8. Art Of Noise Featuring Max Headroom - Paranoimia

Record 1 Side 2

1. Chris De Burgh - The Lady In Red
2. David Bowie - Absolute Beginners
3. Genesis - Invisible Touch
4. Simple Minds - All The Things She Said
5. The Housemartins - Happy Hour
6. Big Country - Look Away
7. Furniture - Brilliant Mind
8. Midge Ure - Call Of The Wild

Record 2 Side 1

1. Wham! - The Edge Of Heaven
2. Owen Paul - My Favourite Waste Of Time
3. Amazulu - Too Good To Be Forgotten
4. Doctor & The Medics - Spirit In The Sky
5. Bananarama - Venus
6. Bucks Fizz - Mamba Seyra (New Beginning)
7. a-ha - Hunting High & Low (Remix)
8. Simply Red - Holding Back The Years
9. Queen - A Kind Of Magic (Bonus Track)

Record 2 Side 2

1. Billy Ocean - When Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going
2. Jaki Graham - Set Me Free
3. Nu Shooz - I Can't Wait
4. The Real Roxanne With Hitman Howie Tee - (Bang Zoom) Let's Go Go
5. Lovebug Starski - Amityville (The House On The Hill)
6. Midnight Star - Headlines
7. Aurra - You And Me Tonight
8. Patti LaBelle & Michael McDonald - On My Own

N.B. I've put this compilation together via digital sources and attempted to replicate the original release as closely as possibly. Some of the tracks may differ slightly in length to the original release but are as close to them as I could possibly get.

Kylie Minogue - Rhythm Of Love - The Singles (PWL / 1990 - 1991)

Heading back to the early 90's we have four of Kylie's biggest and long enduring single releases.
Not necessarily the highest charting of her career but definitely dancefloor monsters that rocked the more discerning clubs back in the day. These releases are the epitome of PWL's output and all feature on her third album "Rhythm Of Love"...

First up "Better The Devil You Know"- the first release from "Rhythm Of Love".
This single showcased a more mature sound compared to Kylie's previous "fluffier" releases.
The track hit a peak of number 2 on the UK national charts in April 1990.
The Mad March Hare Mix is featured here...

Following on from "Better The Devil You Know" the second release "Step Back In Time" was released in October 1990. It entered and peaked at number 4 on the UK charts.

Third release "What Do I Have To Do" is in my opinion Kylie's best single release ever!
The track was initially due to be released as the second single but was pushed back in favour of
"Step Back In Time" at the last minute in order to spend more time remixing the track.
This little beauty has never really left my record box and listening to it now it's not hard to see why. This "Pump & Polly" Mix really is the business!

Unfortunately the UK single buyers were a little dumb founded with Kylie's more sexually charged image and as a result the single only hit a peak of number 6 in January 1991. Hardly a disaster though.
The kids who were buying her early releases had moved on to pastures new but her new found gay following lapped this up... and quite rightly too.

The fourth and final release from "Rhythm Of Love" was given a complete overhaul my messrs. DNA who had previously reworked Suzanne Vega's accapella track "Tom's Diner" to stunning effect back in late 1990. This was the first time any outsider had managed to get their hands on a PWL release - let alone one from their biggest selling artist.
DNA radically overhauled the whole track into a more contemporary pulsating monster.
Featuring Jazzie P. on rapping duties, the track matched the peak of it's predecessor by hitting number 6 again.

Reactivate 9 : Razor Sharp Beats & Bytes - Mixed By Blu Peter (React / 1994)

Reactivate was and still is a highly sought after and much revered collection that started out way back in 1991 and continued through to the early 00's before unfortunately React Records went bust.
Although React branched out into genres as diverse as Gabba, Art Jungle, Chill Out, Happy House & Happy Hardcore, their strength lay in the release of countless Techno & Trance compilations and singles. The most notable being the Reactivate collection which covered 18 volumes over the space of  a decade...

Out of these releases, two particular volumes (the second of which I'll come to shortly) give an insight into React Records & Reactivate at their creative peak.

Razor Sharp Beats & Bytes is the 9th Volume. With Blu Peter on mixing duties, pioneering the Nu-NRG movement that was prevalent particularly in clubs such as Heaven, Trade & FF's .
This techno / trance monster of an album brings many a happy memory of nights lost on the dancefloor...

This particular version of the album is the limited edition mixed version by Blu Peter.

Tracklist:

1. Peppermint Lounge - Lemon Project (Grapefruit Mix)
2. Sourmash - Throwing Caution To The Wind (Exclusive Mix)
3. Oasis - Ya Ye (Lush Mix)
4. Elevator - Shinny (Harmony Mix)
5. G.T.O. - Let It Go
6. Trigger - Pipemania (Blu Peter Mix)
7. Coloured Vision - Violet Rain
8. Phasis - Mind Illusions
9. Omniglobe - C'mon Yo
10. Sunbeam - Outside World
11. Mega'Lo Mania - Moonsign
12. Jens - Loops & Tings (Fruit Loops Mix)
13. Marmion - Schoneberg (Marmion Remix)

The Vault V2.0 has arrived...

It's good to be back!
Welcome to the new bigger, bolder, sexier version of The Vault.

Having had a re-think on how to represent the music that I love and the sheer spectrum of styles that make for an eclectic collection, I decided it was time for a complete re-vamp...and then some.
The new look Vault is still going to include classics from the past, long lost gems, favourites from the present and new releases that are likely to become staples in my collection.
I'll also be looking to add full albums, multiple mixes of single releases and much more...
I really hope you enjoy it as much as I do presenting it...

Hope you enjoy the ride!
